Fix Colby's laptops

Synopsis

Colby has some broken laptops to fix.

HP TPN-W12

  • CPU: i3-6100U

Needs

  • Fix the broken screen bezel (pictured below)
    • Seems like a superglue job.

Comments

Very low-end computer. If there are any internal problems, it'd be junkworthy, as these laptops are notoriously hard to put back together (due to awkwardly placed power ribbons).

Would not be surprised if it has Fast Ethernet rather than GigE.

Toshiba Satellite C55-B5270

  • CPU: Intel Pentium N3530 (bench)
    • This CPU is unaffected by hyperthreading vulnerabilities as the cores are discrete
    • Generally high-end, low-power CPU
    • Great re-use computer

Needs

  • Charger
    • 19.5V @ 3.42A.
    • We should have something at the Lab, but if not check out this eBay listing
  • SSD

Toshiba L75D-A7283

  • CPU: AMD A4-5000

Needs

  • Charger
  • SSD

Dell Inspiron N-4110

  • CPU: i3-2350M

Needs

  • Battery
  • SSD

Comments

Sounds like a decent computer. We may have scrapped one of these, in which case we have an extra battery.

HP Touchsmart tx2-1377nr

  • CPU: AMD Turion ZM-87 (bench)
  • DDR2 RAM
  • WD Scorpio black HDD 320GB

Needs

  • charger
    • 16.5V @ 3.5A. We should try one of the old IBM ThinkPad chargers I have at the Lab; if not, check out this eBay link.
  • battery (maybe)
  • SSD

Links

  • Disassembly

Advice

  • Much more work and much older computer. The CPU is ancient and high-TDP. Probably worth scrapping!

  • It does have an Expresscard34 slot, which could be interesting to use

  • My friend's fiancee is interested in a tablet, and this seems like it would be a perfect fit.

Additional hardware links / info

Hard drives

  • 120GB Crucial SSD -- Crucial BX500 120GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5-Inch Internal SSD - CT120BX500SSD1Z

smartctl

On Linux, sudo smartctl -a $DEVICE gets SMART data off of the drive (unless your SATA controller is REALLY bad).

Use-cases

Server rack

Laptops make great servers!
