Repair (or replace) Matt Cropp's Dell XPS 13

Synopsis

Matt Cropp's laptop (service tag FM42BH2) appears to have a dead mainboard. He needs a replacement.

Matt made a bid on this eBay listing. The listing corresponds to the service tag HZNRR32.

By and large, follow this guide.

Battery

  • Attempt to swap battery in The batteries for the two laptops appear to be of the same form factor, so they may be interchangeable. Test as much out.

Hard drive

  • Swap in hard drive The laptop Matt bid on has an M2 2280 slot, which is the same slot that was in the 9360. Thus, it should work.

WiFi

  • Swap in better WiFi The laptop Matt bid on has a very poor WiFi card (Broadcom-based). The card in Matt's 9360 (QCA6174) is much bette.r
  • Patch ath10k WiFi for QCA6174 See https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ath10k. TL;DR: WiFi only 60% as fast as it could be. Source. Patch
